Event Description

Directed by: Nicholas Campbell
Canada, 1993, 103 mins. Rated 18.

The next presentation from Haringey Independent Cinema is a rarely shown film about the life of Peter Tosh, reggae artist, Jamaican folk hero, and radical political activist. Packed with rare concert footage, interviews and narration by Tosh himself, this film traces Tosh from his early rise from the slums of Kingston and probes the unanswered questions surrounding his brutal death.

Tosh died in 1987 but narrates his life story via the “Red X” tapes, a series of microcassette recordings that were originally to be used for the singer’s autobiography. The name comes from the fact that whenever Tosh spotted his name on an official government document, it would normally be followed by a red-inked X. The director uses interviews with various members of the Tosh family, his friends and associates to fill in the gaps.

If you are a fan of reggae there’s some fantastic footage of both Peter Tosh as well as the Wailers concerts with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. If you don’t know much about reggae, this is your chance to find out about one of its greatest legends.
