To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of New Beacon Books by John La Rose in Stroud Green Road, a lunchtime screening of the documentary film ‘Dream To Change The World’.
The film draws on the visual archive of past events in the multicultural history of Trinidad and its Diaspora to tell for the first time the life-story of John La Rose (1927-2006).
Directed by Trinidadian photographer and film-maker Horace Ové and edited by Peter Stern, La Rose discusses his involvement in workers' rights movements in Trinidad in the 1940s and 1950s leading up to independence from the British. A labour activist, publisher and poet, La Rose settled in London, becoming an active member of Britain’s Black community in the early 1960s, founding New Beacon Books in Stroud Green and The Caribbean Artists Movement.
Through music and the arts of carnival, steel-pan and calypso, La Rose leads the viewer through the intrinsic links between the arts and social transformation.
Doors open at 12 noon; refreshments available.
Kindly supported by the Friends of Bruce Castle.
With thanks to the New Beacon Bookshop and the George Padmore Institute.
