Event Description

George Kenner was a German national living in London as an ‘enemy alien’ in 1915. Taken into internment following the public outcry over the sinking of the ‘Lusitania’ he was to spend the remainder of the war in three camps including Alexandra Palace where he was held between September 1915 and June 1916.

Kenner was an artist and recorded life around him during his internment including his time at the Palace in a series of watercolours, drawings and sketches.

Together with his journal the archive created by Kenner is one of if not the most comprehensive records of civilian internment in Britain during the Great War.

George documented his time at the Palace with an impartiality and accuracy that has stood the test of time and allows us a window upon a largely forgotten aspect of those dark days a century ago.
