This very special night will spotlight the stories of ten young women who have recently attained ‘Leave to Remain’ or who are still at various stages of the asylum process. Each story will tell of the individual’s struggle, the fears and sadness as well as her strength and resilience, her experience of the system, the loss of family and absence of sustained support as well as the moments of human warmth and kindness encountered. These stories will be the product of several workshops involving the women carried out in collaboration with the Helen Bamber Foundation. Each will then be edited and polished by local author, broadcaster and campaigner, Michael Rosen. These will then be shared with two groups of local people who will, through another series of workshops, develop and transform them into spoken word renditions and perform them on behalf of and in honour of the women. This event forms part of a broader project, which provides the women with the opportunity of expressing their hopes and dreams by photographing images of a world they seek to be part of. These images accompanied by the written word will be part of a photography exhibition also entitled ‘Hope in a Hostile Environment’.
