We all know that the Bayeux tapestry (which is not actually a tapestry at all) tells us about the Battle of Hastings, doesn’t it?

Actually, the tapestry tells us far more. Generally regarded as one of the greatest works of art, if not the greatest, of the early medieval period, it gives deep insights into everyday life of the period. In his talk, Mike Brown will look at what the tapestry actually is, who made it, how, when, and most interestingly, why. He looks at the dozen named people, the unanswered questions, how did Harold die, who was Aelfgifu, and what was she doing with the monk, and modern discoveries, such as the throwing mace.

Doors open at 7.30pm for the sale of refreshments and publications and close at 8pm. The main doors have to be closed at that time for security reasons, so anyone arriving after then will be unable to gain access.
