Doors open 7pm, music starts 8pm.
KAIYO welcome award wining saxophonist Mark Lockheart for this night of original music and interpretations of standard material.
Line-up: Mark Lockheart (sax), Simon Purcell (piano), Amy Baldwin (bass), Dave Ingamells (drums).
From Loose Tubes to Polar bear, Mark Lockheart has been a key figure in the development of British jazz. His playing is genre and career defining, running the gamut from big band to classical, experimental to electric, his talent knows no bounds.
KAIYO have performed both as a duo (Simon Purcell & Amy Baldwin) and as a trio. Tonight they are expanding into a quartet with Dave Ingemells on drums and featuring saxophonist Mark Lockheart – much admired, multi award-winning saxophonist and composer. https://www.marklockheart.co.uk
Steeped in the tradition of the great jazz piano trios (Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Chick Corea, Geri Allen), KAIYO presents the unique talents of each player in a collective and interactive format, communicating musical adventure, playfulness, lyricism, and fun. ‘KAIYO’s music is welcoming and surprising, respecting the jazz tradition as well as presenting original material.’
‘KAIYO’s approach to improvising is collective, spontaneous and ensures that each performance is fresh and fun.’
Since coming to fame with Loose Tubes in the 1980’s, multi-award winning Mark Lockheart has been in the vanguard of British jazz for four decades. Mark co-founder of “Perfect Houseplants” toured and recorded with Django Bates, Mike Gibbs, Mark Anthony Turnage, his own 11 piece “Scratch Band” and Seb Rochford’s highly acclaimed “Polar Bear”. His recent album ‘Smiling’ is already attracting plaudits.
