‘Not Waving but Drowning: Not Drowning but Waving – the Enigma of Stevie Smith’
Palmers Green poet, Stevie Smith –mercurial, idiosyncratic, deep-thinking –is well-known as the author of the landmark Not waving but drowning, a title loaded with irony and illustrating her use of understatement. This workshop explores her poetic gift, the enduring popularity of her poetry and offers writing exercises à la Stevie with an overview of her life:

The workshop will have two parts:
Writing workshop: 10.30 am - 1 pm
Talk: ‘Who was Stevie?’ plus questions and readings of poems: 2.00 - 4.30 pm
Katherine Gallagher is a widely-published poet and tutor. She has five full collections of poetry, most recently Carnival Edge: New & Selected Poems (Arc Publications, 2010). In 2002, she was co-organiser of the Stevie Smith Centenary Palmers Green Poetry Festival, ‘Ten Days with Stevie Smith’.
