7.5 mile linear walk from Welwyn Garden City to Welwyn North – there is the possibility for those wanting a lesser distance to sit out part of the walk (just over 3 miles) in the village of Ayot Green (on a bench or at The Waggoners) to be collected as we pass back through the village before we head back over the A1(M) and onwards to Welwyn North. A pleasant country walk involving woods, a golf course, the banks of the R Lea and old railway track. On the run-in to Welwyn North Station we will have a splendid view of the Digswell Viaduct Walk Leader: Caroline Wall (07803 172527) Outward Journey Please meet at New Southgate Station , ticketed and ready to catch the 13:57 train (it calls at Alexandra Palace 3 minutes earlier at 13:54) which arrives at Welwyn Garden City at 14.23. You will need to buy a ticket as an Oystercard will not cover you for the full journey. Return Journey Return trains from Welwyn North are at 19 and 49 minutes past the hour. Please note that these trains call at Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Potters Bar and Finsbury Park. To return to New Southgate or Alexandra Palace you will need to hop out at Potters Bar and wait a few minutes for the stopping service. From Welwyn GC Station we head across the “gardeny-city” bits to Campus West and then cross from a car park into Sherrardspark Wood an SSSI and Nature Reserve and head N to cross the A1(M) to the village of Ayot Green. We then take a path S and W through the Brocket Park Estate before joining a path along the River Lea to Waterend with its ford and the attractive gabled Waterend House built in Elizabethan times. From here we head a short distance N and join the Ayot Green Way (an old railway line) back to Ayot Green. Here we will collect anyone who has opted to sit out part of the walk. We then head back over the A1(M) and E and N through the woods to Digswell. Just before we head up alleyways to Welwyn N, we will see the impressive Digswell Viaduct. There is the opportunity to take post-walk refreshment at the Cowper Arms next to the station.
