A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
Hi all, with the recent news about food banks I have been looking at supporting Haringey food bank (info here http://haringey.foodbank.org.uk). Just wondered if anyone had come across any other local charities which need volunteers. I am particularly interested in food-related volunteering such as helping out at soup kitchens / shelters etc.
If anyone knows of anything can you pass on the details so that I can see where I might be able to help out?
Cheers, Tracy

By the way, I have read about the free cake for kids birthday cake scheme and have contacted the local organisers to see if I can help, and have also seen about the North Enfield food bank (as well as the Haringey one) - just wanted to check if there is anything else I should be looking into. Thanks!
Hi Tracy -
I am a big supporter of Foodbanks ... whilst remaining immensely frustrated at the fact of their continued existence! ( I wrote something about it on the forum a while back see here for the background and here for the politics). Perhaps we could get something going in Bowes Park / Bounds Green?
One other project - perhaps with a more direct contact than volunteering for a Foodbank - is the Casserole Club (More details on their website here ) It's a project that connects people who like to cook and are happy to share an extra portion of home cooked food, with older and more vulnerable neighbours living close by who could really benefit from a hot cooked meal. They are not yet running locally ... but are starting something in Barnet.
Thanks Richard. I've signed up to the casserole club which sounds like a great idea - shame it's not in our area yet but I'll keep people informed if I hear about how I and other locals could help.
I'd be happy to help out with anything to do with the food bank. Maybe we could try and coincide a collection with the local street markets? I know the next one is not until March ... I'd also be happy to help organise something local for a post Christmas collection - I am sure lots of us end up with excess food which we don't really need after Christmas which we could donate. It would mean as well as the usual staples, people might also get some nicer treats from the food bank. I'll contact them to see if I can get more information whether there is a desire for non staples.
I am also going to see about setting something up at work to do the same thing - I am sure lots of people would donate post Christmas leftovers which would be useful for a foodbank.
Thanks very much for sharing the above links, and if you think I can do anything to help set up something locally, don't hesitate to get in touch.
