A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
Those of you who have listened to the interviews on My Bowes Park will remember hearing Bridie Dyllon, the elderly Irish lady well known in Myddleton Road. She died after some years in a care home.
Bridie came from a small farm in Ireland. As a child she used to feed the farm animals, then go to school – barefoot as she did not have shoes except for going to church on Sundays – and then feed the animals again after school. She came to the UK and worked as a nursing assistant in the early 1950s. She and her husband bought a house in Whittington Road in 1957, and brought up three sons, Cole, Pat and Kevin who still live in the family home.
Bridie spent much of her working life in the local area, particularly on Myddleton Road where she worked in a laundrette from 7 am each day and as a cleaner in the dentists. She also worked in the fur shop that used to be on Whittington Road and did all of her shopping on Myddleton Road. She was a woman who always worked very hard.
She also used to help elderly people in the area by helping them to bed in the evenings and get dressed in the mornings as “…..they were my neighbours… I was willing to help.” Sadly for the last few years she has been in hospital and a care home.
Not only was Bridie a strong, kind and generous person, she was also very funny, and could tell a story or joke to lighten the dampest and darkest day. We will never see her like again, but if you would like to hear Bridie talking about her life in Bowes Park, do listen to her interview on : https://soundcloud.com/mybowespark/bridie-dyllon
Our sincere condolences to Cole, Pat and Kevin.
