Left over paving blocks.....Can you help Springfield Community Park?

It's a bit outside our normal stamping ground, but the wild area on the western edge of Springfield Park needs a few things you might be able to help with

In 2013 a wonderful man called Derek - who had sadly been made redundant by Bruce Castle where he used to work with children and young people doing art and creative works - started to 'improve' the wild area. It was so overgrown that it was even impossible to pick the blackberries. Derek has cut back the brambles and other undergrowth. He has created a raised central bed using rocks and stones found around, put in plants that he had spare and ones given by people. He has made a wonderful Bug Mansion, and a number of information boards which tell people about the plants and animals and how to look after them. A lady scarecrow arrived in one corner – who was displaced by a Santa figure for the festive season. Derek has scrounged some chairs for the lads who go and smoke and chat - the teenagers who need to escape from their parental homes and just 'hang out'. Derek is well aware that there is almost nothing locally for the teenagers to do – the youth club is closed, no local youth workers, no local skate park etc, so they need the seclusion that the wild area gives them in the summer.

Derek says the park needs a few things you may be able to help with.

  • Wild flowers – please scatter any seeds you have, or plant any plants where you see a space.

  • The pond needs a bit more wildlife – have you any stickle backs or pond beetles?

  • AND.... do you have any concrete slabs which will continue to make the paths and cover the mud tracks? If you have any crazy paving, or broken slabs left over, please do take them down to the wild-life area. Just put them where they will continue a bit of paved path. Access to the wild life area is from Park Road or from the path from Durnsford Road. You will need a wheel barrow, a trailer, or some very strong blokes.

And let us all hope that Haringey still has enough money in the coffers to sort out the kiddie playground here which is just a series of swamps. There are some good pieces of equipment, but only useable by a mudlark with waders. Not good enough at all.

So glad someone is caring about Springfield Park! Thanks for the update Caroline. Will definitely take some seeds over to scatter.

where is springfield park?

Take the road down by the Springfield Pub (Park Road) go down past the school on your right. You will come to Springfield park on your right. You can go across it to get onto Durnsford Road.

Very impressed by Derek. Often have a peep and its looking good. You get a fabulous view of sunrise at the top of Springfield Park. Has cheered me up often. So glad its being looked after. And yes, will look for some plants.

many thanks, Caroline (J-M)

Hi Caroline,
My husband is a landscaper and has some bits and bobs of pavers he is happy to donate. When is Derek usually around- is there a particularly good time he's there. Pete is happy to just drop off but so long as he can get access.

Dear Alexis,

Great!  There is access all the time in the day time... it is open to all.  I suggest he parks up near the entrance off Park Road (turn down past the Springfield Tavern).  Then puts the paving in a wheel barrow and walks up main path to the woody area at the back.  Just put the paving down by the end of any 'paved' path, or lay them to continue the path if he has time.

Derek and park users will be delighted.

Love the rockery that's been created - the wild part of the park looks great, well done everyone who's helped, especially Derek.
