In the wall-to-wall media coverage following the announcement of the death of Baroness Thatcher, one local story caught my eye.

It's acknowledged that as first female Prime Minister Mrs Thatcher was a figure who divided opinions and loyalties (as this "write-your-own-tribute" page so deftly displays) but yesterday a manager at Crouch End's OddBins Off-Licence was suspended after tweeting this Champagne related message “If for any reason anyone feels like celebrating anything we have Taittinger available at £10 less than usual at £29. Just saying...”

What do you think? Fair comment or crossing a line?

Haha. Ahem.

I see from the article he tweeted as Oddbins, so I can see why management might not be too impressed - after all, they may have as many pro-Thatcher customers as ones who felt like celebrating something yesterday.

Tell him if he starts up his own shop I'll buy my plonk from him instead. Bloody idiotic.

http://kmflett.wordpress.com/ This is related to the Oddbins story. And yes, it's a ridiculous overreaction to suspend this man for his tweet!

ridiculous -- but certainly brings attention to the power of the digital footprint

Oh god, I remember vaguely tweeting something t'other night from The Step and thinking I probably shouldn't have. Don't tell Nell or she might fire me!

All jokes aside, that is an absolute travesty and the world has gone mad. I was going to pick up a bottle of plonk on my way home tonight and will purposefully avoid Oddbins. I know it's a smalll and irrelevant stand but have that Oddbins! Just sayin...

Right, it's boycott odd bins time then. Dweebs.

Can't imagine what he was referring to, if anything...

And so, whatever his or our personal opinions are, I certainly don't think that there can be any justification for suspending him.

Agreed. The best funerals are a celebration of life, a good boss would have cleverly managed the message in subsequent tweets to protect his employee's inexperienced tweet. Setting wheels in motion to sack them however suggests to me that Oddbins is not the kind of establishment that deserves crouch end patronage.
