Clearing out George Moore's Menswear I have an enormous quantity of old scrap metal, and until recently often saw a couple of metal collectors ( a Romanian couple who often pushed a hand cart) but have not seen them around for ages.

If anyone knows anyone who collects metal, please can you let me know, I'd love to give it to someone who collects it rather than just dump it at the tip.

Thanks.

To prevent unscrupulous people such as metal thieves taking, for example, copper cables from beside railway lines and lead from roofs, metal dealers now have to be licensed. So it is unlikely that you will see the Romanians with a hand cart anymore.

There are, however many scrap metal firms who will recycle metal (just do a search on the web). You can also recycle metal at your local Council recycling centre - no need to just dump it.

Your local centre could be at Summers Lane, depending on where you are.

Great, thanks Brian. That would make sense, I am aware of some of the abuses that went on before, so licensing seems like a good idea. I was thinking that I could avoid the several trips to the recycling centre and the renting of a van if they collected it- always looking to go with the path of least resistance ( ie, cost! ) at this stage in the renovation process.

Leave it out on the street, I guarantee it will be gone by the morning. Plenty of people still roam the streets looking for scrap metal. I left some old doors out about a year ago and within 12 hours, the hinges had gone off them.
