A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
Hi neighbours
Wouldn't it be great to get a Sunday market going on Myddleton Road. Has anyone ever explored this idea?
I was just reading the paper today and saw a story about a group who regenerate old arcades such as Granville Arcade in Brixton, filling empty units with independent retailers and creative spaces. I thought.. how could some of that spirit be transferred to Myddleton road..? I know there are lots of discussions about how it could be regenerated. Thankfully The Step is coming, which will hopefully kick start something, but also it got my mind thinking - a market would bring people to the area, you wouldn't have to deal with property / council / long lost owners issue of empty shops (although obviously it would be great to have them used in better ways eventually), and it would provide a place for local retailers to sell interesting stuff that you don't find in Wood Green!
My brother lives in Clapton and there are a couple of Sunday Markets. Chatsworth Road has become much more interesting with new independent shops. I dont see why Myddleton Road couldn't go the same way.
Lucy.

oh no read this too late! will definitely make the next one.. how often do they run do you know?
Hi Lucy - They run once a month I think, they started small - a couple of tables of jewellery and hand made stuff in the shop and now they have extended slightly - including locally grown produce and locally laid eggs!
I think its the right model - a small start with a few local suppliers and grow gradually.
Hmm. I visited the Book shop last week and there were 3 stalls in the shop plus some cupcakes outside, and myself the only customer .... or did I miss something? Is there some large area out back with lots more???
No - it is a very small affair - that's the point I was making.
A small start with a handful of stalls is probably more realistic than attempting to launch with a major market, something the size of Chatsworth Road - or Brixton Village which have been mentioned in this thread.
There is no reason why a local market couldn't grow to that sort of size - but it is unlikely to be that big from the outset.
I've had some good advice from a woman who helped get Chatsworth Road Market going. It would be good to share thoughts at the next meeting or at least fill someone in beforehand. Or we could set up our own group to discuss?
I think a separate group is called for. Count me in!
i think it would be good if there is a separate and focused group but am sure the community association will support in any way it can. There is an issue of the Bowes Park Community Association newsletter which is now being planned and is delivered to c 3000 in the Bowes park area. Would you like to put a couple of lines together for that and advertise a meeting on the sunday market?
Hi Cathy
Thats a great idea. Can you message me your email address and I'll get a few lines over to you? When is the next one coming out?
Excellent!
Look what Susie found re Mary Portas high street fund http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16881291
Maybe we should do a Myddleton Road video and apply!?
Who is up for meeting at the Step to discuss the market idea on Saturday 24th March? Im going to get it mentioned in the next newsletter too. Open to all.
Lucy
