Here is a photograph of the Ranelagh Pub - it must be from around the 1890's?
The men (all men) in the picture are holding thin canes ... is this some sort of "Beating the Bounds" tradition?
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Many thanks to Kate Long at the Ranelagh Pub for passing on the Photograph

A wonderful photo! I can spot at least seven different types of hat.
I have seen this photo in a local history book.It was taken in 1893 apparently.
Thanks Paul - is there any explanation of what's going on in the book?
A wonderful picture! Thank you. Perhaps it is a lynching party out to get carriage-clampers.
It is a photo taken of the participants of the 'Beating the Bounds' ritual in 1893.
Fab. What book was it, Paul - do you remember?
It's called 'Haringey pubs' by Chris & Hazel Whitehouse Lindsey.Published in 2004.It is a little 'Tottenham-centric' but is worth reading regardless.
Ace, thank you - will track it down.
Excellent Photo :)
