BACK TO CAVE            by Andrea Phillips

Go back to your cave

It’s raining fierce, cold

Hard, wet, solid rain

The rain of chills and sneezes.

Go back to your cave,

Hunker down

With a steaming mug;

Be snug indoors.

Shun the bravery of fools

Risking feats;

The doers, the chancers,

They’ll come unstuck.

Just consolidate

Back in your cave;

Back to fire watching

In the hearth.

Let wood smoke motes

Link your deep ancestral memory

Warmth, family, food -

A living human.

Wait out the bitter storms;

Let them run their course

And when they’re done,

Venture out again.
