It is with sadness that I have to report the death of Donald Smith, who died unexpectedly on New Year’s Day.

Many readers will recognise Don as a regular contributor to the Bowes and Bounds Forum; he was also seen regularly at Local Council Ward Forums. Whether in print or in person he had a genuine ability to identify salient details in planning applications and official documents- and the likely impacts that these might have on the local community. He took a keen interest in the fine print and details of local government policy and his analytical review would often hold elected members and council officers to account.

Writing on the Palmers Green Community Website, Basil Clarke says “Readers of Bowes and Bounds Connected could be sure of learning the latest news about planning applications, council activities, NHS developments or local rail and bus services.”

Don had worked locally for many years at STC (later Nortel) in New Southgate where he was remembered as a diligent work colleague. In later life, he lived in Pelipar Close, Palmers Green and regularly attended three different church congregations as well as participating in other local events and public meetings. His attention to detail and scrutiny will be missed – as will his generous and informative contributions to civic life in Enfield.
