Can you take a photo and post it here to help identify it? Does it have collar with a name tag and an address? If not, a paper collar with a message and your phone number is a good next step – it gives the owner the chance to confirm the cat – and they – are OK. 

Else the next step might be to see if it has an ID chip, though that will mean getting the RSPCA or similar involved.
