A report on the BBC news Website this week indicates that Enfield Council have approached Ken Clarke at The Ministry of Justice to request permission to introduce a by-law banning spitting in the street, parks and public spaces. They want to introduce an on-the-spot-fine  for perpetrators ... If  my observations are typical the  collected fines are likely to make Enfield one of the wealthiest boroughs in London!

This ambitious bit of policy making has recieved a bit of a boost this week with news that the Mayor of London Boris Johnson is supportive when he said he found the habit offensive. The London Mayor made his comments following a question from GLA member Joanne McCartney relating to Enfield Council's bid to outlaw spitting in parks and public places.

A poster campaign has been launched and an online petition has been set up to register residents responses.  If 2,750 signatures are collected it will trigger a full council debate and may enable by-law change to be made.

Whilst this is clearly a worthwhile ambition - I can't help thinking it will take more than a few posters and a council debate to have any real effect on behaviour.
