With a new series of Doctor Who starting on BBC this weekend members of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society , or Whovians, are getting into a state of anticipatory excitement.

In a fascinating bit of research the Londonist blog has published a map of the locations of Doctor Who episodes based in London dating, right back to the first Doctor, William Hartnell, in the early sixties.

Most locations of the Doctor Who series were within central London, but one episode was filmed locally - around Muswell Hill.

Based at the time of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 The Idiot's Lantern plays heavily on the idea of the first mass televised national event and tells the story of Dr Who villain "The Wire" (played by Muswell Hill resident Maureen Lipman). Who uses rays from TV screens to take control of her victims. The backdrop of Alexandra Palace Television mast also features in the programme.
