A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
I wonder if any of the members of Bowes & Bounds went to the Wood Green Jazz Club in the late 50's, early 60's
My cousin, who lived in Oakwood, was a regular there. He has lived in France for the last 45 years and his 70th birthday is looming. Does anyone have, or know of a source for posters advertising events at the club from that era?
I would love to present him with a memory form his youth.
As a by the by, I used to work in the big house just down Bounds Green Road, about 100 yds from the station in the late 60's. Our company was called Wedco, but I believe that previously it was occupied by the Foresters Society? Anyway, I wonder if it is still there? The drawing office I worked in was downstairs, looking out on the road, and we had a lovely garden to sit in at lunchtimes. Happy memories
Thanks everybody for taking the time to read this and any help with the poster would be greatly appreciated

Hi Terry - what a wonderful idea!
Richard wrote a fantastic blog post on here about the Jazz Club. Not sure if it will give you any leads on posters through:
Hi Lindsey
Thank you for coming back to me.
I hope that Richard sees this and maybe has a clue to follow up
Although I dont live in your area, I know it quite well and thought it was the countryside when I visited my cousins in Oakwood, Arnos Grove and Cockfosters! We lived in Holloway so I am pleased now to live in Hampshire
Thanks again
Thanks for you kind review of my blog Lindsey!
Terry:
I tracked down bits of information from quite a few sources however, there is an online forum with reminicences from WG Jazz Club which might produce a few leads.
Additionally I understand that some local authority money supported the Wood Green Jazz society back in the late 50s ... it's a bit of a longshot, but Bruce Castle - the Haringey local history museum may have some records - and possibly posters?
Another possibility is the Hornsey Historical Society. It would be fascinating to know about any material you uncover.
Good luck.
Thank you very much Richard. I will let you know if I do find anything.
As part of my search I have co-opted another cousin who runs an internet book service, so I have feelers out everywhere.
My only concern is that, if I find what I'm looking for, I wont be able to afford it!
Thanks again and I will visit your web site regularly to see what goes on in my old 'stamping ground'

Hi Terry
The big house you are talking about is still there but has been boarded up for some time now. Sometime last year I went to a consultation evening about developing it into an aparthotel - nothing seemed to come of that though. Such a shame it is a lovely building which has been extended quite a bit at the back.
Good luck with your poster search!
Thank you Sue
Yes, that is a shame. I can still walk round it in my mind, but I guess it will look a lot different now.
I've just passed your site details on to yet another cousin who lives in Enfield, so you might get another member!
Sue / Terry
As I understand it Forrester House, was initially one of three similar houses along that stretch - the other two were damaged beyond repair when Bounds Green Tube Station was bombed during the early part of the Blitz in 1940.
And yes, Sue - there was a proposal to redevelop the house - including (IMHO) a pretty ugly extension at the back entirely out of keeping with the original structure. The planning docs are still online including floor plans and photos - but there is no sign of any work starting yet.
