Muswell Hill & Finchley Brass Band issues '9-Week Challenge' to learn a musical instrument

Muswell Hill & Finchley Brass Band is issuing a thrilling 9-Week Challenge to local people of all ages who have a yearning to learn to play a musical instrument.

From experience, we've found that we can teach an adult beginner the basics sufficiently well over a 9-week period to enable them to play simple material with the band and, most importantly, to have caught the brass bug :-)

In fact, we've taught scores of adults to play brass, over the years, and we'd like to invite you to come along and have a go too.

We meet on Wednesday evenings in Muswell Hill (Muswell Hill Methodist Church, 28 Pages Lane, London N10) and on Monday evenings in Finchley (Finchley Methodist Church, Ballards Lane N3). We work with professional music coaches and we have a stock of instruments... so, there you have it: no excuses!

We're part of the North London Brass network of traditional British brass bands meeting also in Enfield, Edmonton and down in Putney & Wandsworth too - so you can also learn at any of those locations. This gives us a chance to play both local gigs and exciting massed bands events in Central London as well.

We have a specialist youth band, ideal for young people still at school, based at our Enfield Band, meeting on Wednesday evenings (Lancaster Road URC, Enfield EN2). This session is suitable for adult learners too, if you are based around the Enfield area.

So, if we've tempted you and you fancy learning a new skill, having fun, meeting new friends and generally amazing yourself, please get in touch and we'll sort something out.

You can read more about our community music projects on our website at www.fourhillsmusic.co.uk or you can ring me on 020.8366.0657 or email me on martyn@fourhillsltd.com

We want you to have a go so that you can share the joy of playing an instrument. There is no cost involved for taking part in our 9-Week Challenge to learn brass.

Thanks for reading - now, please ask questions and I'll do my best to twist your arm ...

It sounds wonderful - my dad used to play with the Salvation Army band in the old days. He only joined up to learn to play an instrument...then he became a professional musician.   I hope you get lots of recruits.  It's a brilliant thing!

Thanks, Kathleen. Yes, the Salvation Army has produced, and continues to produce, lots of excellent musicians.

We've had a few new recruits already for our '9-week Challenge'. If we can tempt you too, I'm sure you'd enjoy it and would be able to carry on the family musical tradition... so, please let us know if we can help.

We've revamped our website and have put some more relevant info on there concerning the Challenge, so please do have a look: www.northlondonbrass.co.uk

Best wishes

Martyn - It would be lovely - but at 69, I nearly pass out blowing into my grandson's plastic recorder!  :(

Oh dear, Kathleen, not good to be doing that. Percussion might be safer?

On the other hand, if you've not suffering from a particular breathing condition, it is all in the technique and can actually help with maximising lung capacity.

(Do I get a prize for not giving up?)

M

Can I come and just see what it's like?  (she said in scarey, nervous voice).

Yes, Kathleen, of course, it will be great to meet you.

We are rehearsing this Wednesday, tomorrow, in fact, 10 July 2013, main band from 8pm and a small learners' session from 7.30pm. It's at Muswell Hill Methodist Church, 28 Pages Lane N10 1PP.

Please come and say hello. We're all friendly and a mixed bunch of all ages and backgrounds.

We are on a break the following week as we are playing at Hertford Theatre, but normal rehearsals resume again after that. Please let me know when you are coming along. No pressure at all.

Best wishes

OK - I'll come tomorrow at 7.30.  Thanks for being so welcoming (I can make the tea if all else fails?)

That's good, see you there, Kathleen.

It was lovely to meet you this evening, Kathleen, at Muswell Hill & Finchley Brass Band - and what a fabulous evening with a number of adult new starters trying out brass instruments for the first time.  Thank you for coming along and I look forward to playing some more music with you soon :-)

Regards

Martyn
