Alternatively you could set up a group here on Bowes and Bounds and we could all just post what we want to swap? Need some DIY help now too! ;)

Hi Everyone, I've been following this thread with interest.

If you are interested in volunteering your time/skills in your local area then why not have a look at the things available through the national volunteering website www.do-it.org.uk: I did a search just now and came up with 15 opportunities within 1 mile and 50 within 2 miles: http://www.do-it.org.uk/search/opportunities?unit=mile&distance....

I am the manager of the Volunteer Centre for the borough of Enfield and we post the opportunities to this web site and update it every week. You can register on the site for free and without any 'obligation'.

You could also register at the social action network http://ivo.org and you will be notified of anything that comes up in your area. Our space on that site is at http://ivo.org/volunteercentreenfield .

We run free half day Introduction to Volunteering workshops if anyone is interested. Once again - no obligation. Book places here: www.enfieldva.org.uk/volunteer

If anyone decides to set up their own community action group, we can also help you recruit volunteers to help if you need it/them.

To swap items no longer needed, you could try freecycle and freegle.

I'm hearing you Diana! I've just joined Haringey timebank but it doesn't look as straightforward as just setting up a 'skills-swap' group on here and simply stating what you'd like and what you can offer. I could only see 2 offers - can others see more? Really don't like supplying names and daytime telephone numbers of 2 friends either - do they ring them up? Quite sure none of my friends want to be disturbed at work! Sureka

It's really hard to see what's being offered and requested through the website. I emailed the coordinators and they were helpful and have since emailed me with something I might be able to help with but it doesn't look like there's a lively community of people swapping just yet!

Agreed Lindsey - I offered Salsa or English lessons as well as copywriting and proofreading  and requested help with web design +SEO, marketing, and videography/photography of one of my Salsa lessons for my website but I can't (yet) see my offers or requests on the website (maybe it takes a while to be processed?). Nor is there a space to state your credentials for the skills you are offering which is rather worrying! If there's anyone on here who's interested and fancies a skills swap let me know Sureka x ps. I note you say you have joined timebank - i cant find any record of your joining form coming through to me, could you possibly tell me when you joined, it is probably a blip on the system - you can email me direct on sam.leggatt@groundwork.org.uk - if you dont want to go thru the bother of completing the form again you can simply give me your address and date of birth, i can see from above what you are offering and requesting so can get that on the site for you - my apologies for the delay, this will be sorted asap for you

Hi to everyone involved in this discussion - i will try to clarify a few points and sort out some of the very relevant issues you have raised.

You seem to have a very active community around the bowes and bounds area and this would be a great place to start with your skill sharing - in Timebank we do not ask you to 'volunteer' in the traditional way, the idea is to encourage a sense of neighbourhood with neighbours helping neighbours, therefore if you have a neighbour you can do a good turn for you can still earn a credit (we would need the name of the neighbour and an approximate date of birth only so we can show where the credit has been earned) this person can join the TB as a full member if they so wish or just appear as a beneficiary member.

One of the benefits of you being a member is that you can earn your credits by doing things locally and then access the wider data base of the TB in order to see if anyone is offering the skill you need.

The reason we ask for the contact details of 2 people is for safeguarding - we simply ask how long they have known you, in what capacity and if they would have any concerns about you offering to if the offer were to involve a vulnerable group.  If your references do not wish to be disturbed during the day or would not like to give this information over the phone, we will get in touch with them via email or post.

We are aware that most of our get togethers and activities take place during the day because of limitations on the hours we can access our work space - however, we are planning to hold some evening events starting early in the new year - hopefully you may be able to attend, it would be good to meet some new people who are so enthusiastic about the idea of skill sharing.

Hoping this may have cleared up some of your concerns
