In June last year I found - by the New River - a lovely tray full of gifts to the god of life-giving water.  This was a known Hindu custom at a time when the god's help was much needed. Yesterday when picking up bottles and cans I found something else which amazed me. At the top of the bank, just to the side of the steps to the New River off Myddleton Road there were two red wine bottles, two circles of small glasses which were three-quarters full of red wine, and in the centre of one circle there were some 2p pieces, and in the other circle there were some 1p pieces, and by each circle some slices of good bread.  They were very neatly arranged.  I considered picking them all up, but I felt that was in some strange way 'disrespectful' to whoever had left this 'gift'.  I decided to leave them another day, but as they would probably be kicked about and make lots of broken glass if left much longer I picked them up today.

One bottle was still over half full. Some of the glasses had been pushed over - probably by nosey dogs - and there are 14 of them.  I emptied the bottle and the glasses on the ground, and took all the glass and coins away.  The glasses are engraved "ouzo plomari - Isidoros Arvanitis".  They are now all washed and I hope to find a home for them.  The 6 2p coins and the 7 1p coins will go in a collection box.

If you can shed any light on this Myddleton Road mystery, please do.
