Hi all,

This is my first post here - nice to meet you all. I've been in the area for about 9 months now, and it's really nice that this sort of thing (B&B) is here to bring everyone together!

Just had a thought that I'd share, I guess it might have come up before. Has it ever been suggested that there could be a mural on the walkway across Bowes Park station? I'm thinking like the one on Bridge Approach in Primrose Hill, and I think there's something similar (but lower-key) somewhere near West Hampstead...

Absolutely no idea how to go about it if it was considered a good idea. Perhaps involve artists, and/or local children? Then there's the issue of potential vandalism, but I'm not sure that should stop people doing this sort of thing.

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear thoughts on all of this.

This is a page of links to small grants schemes some of which might be useful to pay for materials.

or London Community Foundation which gives grants for things like community gardening

Sounds like a great idea. It's so drab and unpleasant in the darker months

Who would we get to do the mural? I don't mind touching it up if it gets vandalised. I live on the corner of Myddleton / Whittington, so I'm not very far.....

Mural would be great.

I wonder if we could link it to the proposed mural on the Shaftesbury Hall designs...

I like that idea, and local landmarks / buildings of distinction in Myddleton Road possibly too??

Yes! In the back of my mind as a distant idea was the potential for these kinds of projects to help us with e.g. safety and social problems in the alleyway alongside the railway. Issues are raised time and time again at queens rd neighbourhood watch but the law/notices etc are one route maybe claiming the space in a diff way might also help...more thought required I'm sure...

Just a quick update - I've got through (finally) to National Rail Infrastructure... I'm now waiting to hear back from the 'structures' department who can determine whether a mural will 'damage' the metal bridge structure (give me strength)... so things have progressed slightly and I'll keep everyone updated!

Thanks

Nell

Great news! I haven't got round to chasing anything up at all, apart from reading up on public art in general. I did have some thought though that it might be linked somehow to the renovation of the Samaritans builiding...

Nice work Nell!

The woman artist who worked with the kids on the Gates Mural by the river was Charlotte Gerrard  who lives in Albert Road - so a local person.  You can look at her website  http://www.charlottegerrard.com/

This sounds like a fantastic idea!  I work for a charity and social enterprise called the Forest Recycling Project in Walthamstow which may be able to help out (I also used to live in Bowes Park too until very recently!).  We collect surplus reusable paint - including from Park View reuse centre in Haringey - and then redistribute it for reuse in the local community (we're part of a national Community RePaint scheme which celebrates 20 years next week - http://www.frponline.org.uk/projects/the_paint_place/).  We may be able to arrange to donate a small quantity of reclaimed paint for use in this project if it goes ahead.

We have also some experience of engaging with local residents to consult on designs, and access local artists to help paint designs if there is funding available for such a project.  See here for some examples of our projects in East London with other community groups and residents associations to date - http://www.frponline.org.uk/murals-painted-with-reclaimed-paint/

Be great to help out if we can, and happy to discuss where we can help if permission is granted for the go ahead.  Fingers crossed!

Cheers

Hi William and all. I'm an artist and part of the team presenting design proposals for the Tin Tabernacle. I was invited to join the group by someone who kindly attended a community meeting last week. I'd very much like to know your ideas for a mural and include school children in the community in the design process.

Regards

Hi David,

I attended part of that (interesting) meeting last week and intended to speak to you actually, but I had to go about halfway through. I'd definitely be very interested to hear your ideas (mine are sketchy) and your experiences doing this sort of thing (mine are non-existent). I suppose I have particular views the purpose of a local mural, the sort of result I'd like and the impact it could have, but of course as it would be a community project I totally accept mine would be just one voice in the discussion...

Might there be any more meetings about the Tin Tabernacle like the last one? If so, perhaps we'll meet at that.

Thanks,

Will
