It's been in the news today that punk hero and front man of the Clash, Joe Strummer, is to be honoured by the naming of a square after him in the Spanish city of Granada
The campaign to rename the square was started by a neighborhood association and City Hall officials agreed to the suggestion backed by 2,000 signatures on a petition.
Whilst Joe Strummer had some close connections with the Spanish City he has a stronger bond with Palmers Green (as our friends up at the Palmers Green Jewel in the North blog have pointed out) - in the early 1970s Strummer, then known as John Graham Mellor, lived at 18 Ash Grove, N13 along with some creative contemporaries from the Central St Martin School of Art and Design and other musicians.
How about a campaign to get a local version of Granada's "Plaza Joe Strummer"? Could we get a petition up asking Enfield Council to rename Ash Grove? "Strummer Avenue" is a far better name than that given to the flat by Joe and Co who dubbed it "Vomit Heights"!
If not a renamed street then at least a blue plaque... whilst the scheme still exists... so we can remember one of our local heroes.

Hi,
I live in Ash Grove, two doors away, and I am beyond excited about this news as I love the Clash! Do you know what do we need to do for it to happen ? Start a petition ?
Thanks
Niki
Hi Niki
Sadly the English Heritage Blue Plaque scheme is currently closed to new applicants.
However the London Borough of Enfield runs their own commemorative plaques scheme (see this link for the list). Perhaps an initial call to the local history team might identify the formal process for approval...
... alternately, in true Punk Style, we could self-organise a DIY style home-made plaque and fit it to the house as a guerilla type local radical history association?
Hi Niki and Richard,
There'd be a lot of support to apply for that scheme. Maybe Nikki or yourself can contact Strummerville either directly or through their Facebook page. ...and in the spirit of the 'LRHA' a C and L could always be applied with a spray can to the street name plate!
Have you seen this at Edgeware road? I took the photo over two years ago, so not sure if it's still there.
I doubt they will ever notice!
