I have no doubt that the LB of Haringey will find some way to be obstructive in letting a market go on in Myddleton Road.  It is in their nature.

I note their 'anger' at the Govt for cutbacks but where is their plan to assist businesses starting up or regenerate places that once were vibrant.  Won't happen unless they can extract money from their constituents.  I had two Labour Party Councillors visit last election time stating they were going to improve the footpaths in Whittington Road.  I note they have 'redocorated' the pavement outside my house with white marker paint, does this count?

Anyone tried to get a skip licence recently?

Hi Tim

It is clear you are irritated by the local authority ... but I don't think this discussions was about asking Haringey to run a market, and I'm not convinced that local authorities have "a nature"... obstructive or otherwise?

I think the discussion here is about a group of local people committed to making our own area a more vibrant, lively and interesting place. The Localism Bill (which received Royal Assent last month) will from April 2012 enshrine a series of Community Rights - including Neighbourhood planning which is likely to make it easier to decide things at a neighbourhood - or sub borough level.

Of course things will still have to be registered and appropriate licences sought (you can download an application for skip licence from LBH website and send it back with the fee - seems pretty straightforward?) It's right that a degree of control ensures disruption to neighbours/traffic/parking etc. is minimised but I do think you are being unfair to characterise all councillors and local authority officers as obstructive.

It is not my experience.

Thanks for all your info. I'll put together an argument and give the council a call in the new year. We may need to form an official "group" so I will keep you posted. I have no idea what it takes to get this to happen but will investigate as much as poss! If there is any way it could happen your support would be much needed as I am a new mum again and on maternity leave only for another couple of months. Life is pretty busy already.

Hi Richard

Many thanks for your response.  I do know how to arrange a skip licence but thanks for the link anyway.  Once upon a time you could conveniently go and pay for the licence in person.  Not anymore and what is more is there is a moratorium banning skip licences commencing 19th Dec 11 ending 4th Jan 12.  Obstructive on both counts, hell yes.  In April 11 the cost of a licence was £40.00, in May 11 the cost rose 75% to £70.00.  Obstructive, hell yes.  Things won't happen unless it suits the Council or they can reap financial reward.

I also realise the discussion is about the idea of a Sunday Market.  My comments relate to the obstructive nature inherant in Council's to turn this idea into fruition.

Let us hope the Localism Bill assists in saving the Pinkham Way site from being turned into a waste facility, which as an individual I am against such a facility in such a location.  It (the Bill) looks to be a bit of a joke actually, simply transferring bureaucracy to bureaucracy.  To implement the principles contained within the Bill one requires competant people in key roles. The track record of this Council (being officially the worst in all of London) is not one that exudes competance.  It is un-likely much planning will progress without the Council's approval and payment of invoice (super sized) attached thereto.  Providing Council's with more authority, as the Bill intimates = Watch out below.  I believe the Bill will play perfectly into the hands of Westminster Council and their parking reforms, as an example. 

I am sorry, but I disagree with you, Councillor's and local authority officers are very much obstructive, that is my continued experience.

I do admire your faith, let's hope we become in a position that enables us to regenerate the Bowes Park area.

Hi Lucy, You don't need to start from scratch on this one. Our local councillors are very helpful and also some of the council officers are working to try to regenerate Myddleton Road. They should be able to advise about 'procedures' There has been suggestions of a market in the road  before and the kind of issues that come up are-do the local traders want one, clearing up any rubbish etc....Have a 'restful' Christmas,which isn't easy as a new mum-and we can try and get some people together in the new year. Shouldn't all have to rest on your shoulders.

Perhaps it is worth looking at using the wide section of the pavement on the south side from Marlborough Rd to Anita's.  You could probably have tables/stalls on the pavement and then that would avoid getting permissions for street closures etc.  It's worth someone going along with tape measure and working it out on a large scale plan/map.   Could probably get a goodly number of tables/stalls.  And The Step would be very close for refreshments.  If it was a Saturday i think the Sandwich Shop might open also.  And the Green Cafe is there also.  If the venture really took off then you could make out a case for street closures etc later.

Could also have a couple of jolly banners across the street it you chatted up some of the residents who live opposite one another.

thats funny I drove past Botany bay yesterday, know exactly where you mean..Im not sure how farmers markets work but I think people do actually come into London to sell at them.

I'd go to that - great idea - its a quiet road - am sure you can get a closure on a market day. Its the market near the Angel islington an occasional market on a street. Maybe a farmers market? Isn't there a farm at Botany bay - maybe they would take a stand for local produce. I can never understand why the Palmers Green farmers market has loads of sellers from the Isle of Wight? The council own the road and pavements so they must be the first port of call - get the local councillors on board would be a good start.

Here's a link from the Etsy craft site which has a post about the regeneration of shops on Willesden High Road - not strictly about a Sunday Market but might be useful at a later stage.   Click here.  I think they got a grant for it.

thanks Kathleen, thats really interesting. I see there is a new fund The Outer London Fund that helped make this happen, which would be perfect for this if Haringey thought so.. see the link here its really interesting as you can also see how they awarded last years funds including Green Lanes Food Festival and a street market in Ponders End!
