Please don't regenerate this corner of Myddleton Road

When I saw this photo of the Lucas Brothers Barber Shop taken in 1999 I was impressed by how little it’s changed in the past decade. I suspect little has changed since it was established in 1982. The premises retain the atmosphere of a barber’s from an earlier period with it's Formica sill and puke green basins.

The spacious shop is a delight. Not only can a gentleman be transformed back into vision of respectability but there’s the pleasure of basking in the sunlight that streams through the windows most afternoons. Hakan has been sub-leasing the barbers for a few years. When he’s not cutting hair he’s monitoring international currency movements on his laptop. Yes, Myddleton Road has seen a lot of change in the 30 years since the shop was established, but Lucas Brothers preserves a comforting dated charm.

They are the same set of pictures in the background as the original 1999 photo. This time though, it's BowesAndBounds member Darren in the chair.

Trimmer attachments, shaving brush, scissors, combs and cut-throat razor. Never argue with a barber!
