Bounds Green Station promoted as an attraction by the Railways

The Guardian has just published a photo essay on the history of the London Underground. The 11th image is a poster from 1933 promoting our station as a destination in itself: "The latest in Railway Station Architecture, come and see it."

An extract from the poster. To see it in full, and all twenty in the series, follow the link.…

The Green gets new playground in time for school holidays

A wooden playground recently opened on the the green near the Ranelagh Pub. It integrates seamlessly with a large trees-stump that’s been left where it was felled. The tree-stump can be used by adults for sitting on or as a continuation of the play area for older children.

A big thank you to Haringey council for installing such a tasteful set of equipment. Its…

New Clamping Signs Opposed by Shops, Council and Freeholders

The "Stop the Clamping Group" was setup to channel the support for action expressed on Bowes&Bounds forum pages. If you judge the group by its goal, its been a failure. Almost every day of the week the clampers continue to cash-in on shocked motorists.

Council Warning Signs

The group initially approached Haringey Council to request that they put-up warning signs at the entrance to the private clamping zone near the Bounds Green tube station. The…

Bounds Green's neighbourliness score

"On my London street, you're lucky if your direct neighbour waves a greeting. Anyone living four houses down could be living in Timbuktu; I don't even know what they look like." That's what I remember from an interview on the radio a few weeks back. The woman being interviewed was explaining her opposition to a new Royal Mail scheme where neighbours opt-in to receive parcels for each other. She hardly knew her neighbours and was certainly not ready to trust them with her Amazon…

Seven Local Artists Have Open House this Weekend

Last year I spent a scorching hot afternoon walking from house to house near Sunshine Garden Centre viewing the variety of works on display. This year you don't even need to go far to gorge on local art: Maidstone, Goring, Clarence, Palmerston Roads and Cornwall Avenue all have open houses. There will also be a craft market and craft activities at The Step Bar/Cafe.

Seven local artists are having exhibitions in their houses this weekend as part of the…

"Insufficient bandwidth" plaguing Bowes Park residents

In the depth of winter last year I saw five phone company engineers removing heavy, greasy black cables the thickness of my arm from under the pavement. They came back later to lay a replacement cable the size of a hosepipe. Then, during the spring the pavements around the entrance of Bounds Green tube was ripped up to allow for the installation of a new green "BT" cabinet. …

Please don't regenerate this corner of Myddleton Road

When I saw this photo of the Lucas Brothers Barber Shop taken in 1999 I was impressed by how little it’s changed in the past decade. I suspect little has changed since it was established in 1982. The premises retain the atmosphere of a barber’s from an earlier period with it's Formica sill and puke green basins.

The spacious shop is a…
