As a Ex Haringey Park Keeper - Many years ago when removed under earlier Budget Cuts
It does not suprise me what is happening
Even if they did have Staff to watch the Parks and Green's
Doubt if it would have stopped the damaged
As if Caught - doubt if they would have been charged or held responsible
Most probably under the infulence of Drink or Drugs - which seems to excuss anyone
these days
Yes it is very sad that this happened. And very unusual here. Haringey Parks kindly removed them. Sadly the Finsbury Gardens bench is not repairable, but the frog is. It will be put back in the gardens in a little while.
It may have been vandalism, but people may have been trying to steal them and the bench just fell to bits. We gather that there is a spate of this at the moment - not just vandals but people with a van taking benches and stuff in the parks and around Haringey. Please keep ears and eyes open and report and note any vehicle numbers etc. A local chap also had in builders lorry stolen - an elderly but serviceable vehicle so perhaps that is being used for stealing yet more!
One main answer in Finsbury is to lock the gardens at night. Haringey Council has agreed that this can happen, but do not have the staff to do it.
So... what we need is a local person willing to do it, or a rota of local people willing to do a day a week, or something similar. Please do contact Friends of Finsbury Gardens if you can help with this.
