A new artwork by graffiti artist Banksy appeared overnight on May 13/14 2012.
It is on the wall of the PoundLand shop on the corner of Wood Green High Road and Whymark Avenue at the Turnpike Lane end of the High Road.
The artwork depicts a young boy - Asian in appearance - barefoot and hunched over a sewing machine. A small pipe on the wall is used to attach a string of cheap plastic Union Flag bunting.

The Bunting was earlier fixed along the wall - but has become detached.
Looks like a comment on the upcoming Jubilee celebrations, maybe a reference to the London 2012 Olympics. Its siting on the wall of Poundland in Wood Green High Street may have a resonance with the street disturbances and looting of last summer?
What do you think of the work?

The graf keeps growing!
That's a brilliant shot! I went down there with my friend yesterday and loads of people were coming up and taking photographs of it. I wonder if the Banksy will ever come back to England.
The "Tap Men" bankers visisble in this photograph are by reknowned street artist Paul "Don" Smith he talks about his work and these characters in this interview.
Seems Wood Green is now becoming a Mecca for London street art despite losing the Banksy.
Appropriate that the street name almost poses a philosophical question "Why Mark"? :-)
Thanks for posting this Richard - really enjoyed reading that interview. I didn't realise they did street art tours - might look into that!
I was wondering if anyone had an update on what's happening about getting the Banksy back?
Lynne Featherstone tweeted this last night:
"Property company who sold Turnpike Lane #banksy to collector have contacted me and requested a meeting!"
Hmmmm...
Well done for the campaigning that seems to have held up the sale. Absent landlords act like sharks in our local areas
That Banksy isn't coming back, but Wood Green is getting a new mural in its place, courtesy of the property owners: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/deal-sealed-for-community-art-on-banksy-...
Lindsey, thanks for this update. I was wondering what was going on.
I wonder if this means that the other interesting artworks that have appeared spontaneously will go? It would be good if they could somehow be incorporated. It's good that this might be the start of a community art project coming out of this outrageous theft of the Banksy. At the same time though - it won't be a spontaneous street art gesture and no doubt those who hold the purse strings will have ultimate control. I don't know what to think really....is it a good outcome?
But what is happening to Slave Labour? I guess it will be kept quietly for a while and then sold off?
The new deal about the wall and artwork is a good gesture in many ways but I agree with Kathleen about the lack of spontaneity and really it will be a sanitised space. Cant imagine the council would sanction anything too controversial or critical of itself, for example. It will lack that spark of edginess. But appreciate the trouble certain councillors have gone to first of all to get Banksy back and also to provide something else there instead for the community.
