Thanks to Twitter correspondent Leone Cunningham who alerted us to the third annual Flying Ant Survey conducted by the Society of Biology.

For the last two years they have been collecting records of flying ants, and last year produced a short video  revealing some surprising results.

They are currently collecting a third year of data and have asked people to complete a simple online survey if you see flying ants. Its a fascinating example of a distributed "citizen science" project.

I thought they were horseflies! Saw so many flying and crawling yesterday, all this makes sense now LOL

Just read the link, for the (un)lucky males that's really 'going out with a bang' ;o)
