Southgate Tube Station's eightieth Anniversary

Whilst much has been made of the London Underground's 150th birthday this year - our local tube stations are not quite as old as the earliest central London parts of the system.

March 13th 2013 marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of Southgate Tube Station as part of the northern extension of the Piccadilly line to Cockfosters from Arnos Park.…

Sign the petition for 30 mins free parking to help our high street shops

Whenever I try to pull up to a space to pop into a local shop it infuriates me that parking meters dominate the area, I got an £80 fine because I did not buy a ticket to pop into the dry cleaners near bounds green tube, seemingly even if I had of popped in Sisley ? Cafe for a coffee, I would not have be fined, as the parking outside those shops are private that but does not apply to the dry cleaner!

Having 30 mins or even 15 mins free parking to allow us to pop Into to local shops…

Mr Passmore Edwards - Victorian Philanthropist and Builder of Libraries

I live in Passmore Edwards House which is a sheltered housing scheme near Bounds Green Station.   It's a strange name...bit of a mouthful.  Yet quite elegant.  (the name - and the building)

Today my daughter sent me an e-mail with an attachment which explains that Mr Passmore Edwards was a Victorian philanthropist…

Join in the Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend

Since the snow, I've become obsessed with feeding the birds in the back yard. And with the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch coming up this weekend, I've even started buying food specially for them - nuts, seeds, dried fruit - to complement their regular diet of old brown bread and tired cheese ends and I'm putting out water so they can have a drink or a bath while it's frozen…

Who is Derek of Palmers Green?

This morning on Radio 4's Broadcasting House a DJ was recalling his favourite record shops.   He mentioned one of his favourites which is a little record shop in Palmers Green run by a bloke called Derek.

I wonder who Derek is and where is his shop.  It sounds really interesting.  Anyone know?

Terrific Saxophone Busker outside Bounds Green Tube

I was feeling a bit blue and just went over the shops on the parade at Bounds Green.  There was a guy busking outside the tube station - a jazz saxophonist playing Take Five by Dave Brubeck amongst other stuff.  I hope he returns, he cheered me up no end. (Yes, I did donate!).

The Cinema Museum - Well worth a visit

On Saturday last I went to The Cinema Museumin Kennington. (Not to be confused with the Film Museum in Covent Garden)  It was a great afternoon. If you are nostalgic for the days of usherettes, ice cream in the interval, film posters and programmes, this is the place to go.

It was good to hear that…

BOUNDS GREEN BIRDS WAKE UP EARLY!

I couldn't sleep last night so was wandering around my flat when at 2:00 a.m. I heard the birds begin to sing. I made a little film of it  which only gets a short blast of their cheery song!   My batteries ran out.  And as sod's law would have it they went full throttle after that - until about 4:00.  I thought they were supposed to be asleep at that hour of the night - but it was nice to have company! …

An incredible paper collage map of Muswell Hill

If you're in Muswell Hill do drop into the library to see these amazing maps.

My colleague Matt wrote about the maps on Londonist yesterday with some detailed photos.

And you can watch a video of the artist Anya Beaumont talking about the project - while it was a work in…

Haringey Cashmob supporting the Big Green Bookshop

Earlier in the autumn I was involved along with Hugh from Harringay online in setting up a local “cashmob”. A cashmob, for those unfamiliar with the term is an interesting new way for people to act together in support of independent local businesses. This “shop local” movement emerged in New York about a year ago. Many of you will have heard about 'flash mobs' -…

The Coin Operated Kiddy Ride Of Bowes Road

Just along the  Bowes Road - near the junction with Brownlow Road - is a sight that is rarely seen anywhere apart from the seaside ... and even then, not seen so often since the 1960s or 70s... so it's a little odd to encounter it on the edge of the North Circuar Road.

Outside Nitin Cash and Carry is a Kiddy Ride in the form of a horse - I understand from the shop owner that this fine creature has been in our neighbourhood for almost 30 years. Well worth a 20p…

Bounds Green Station promoted as an attraction by the Railways

The Guardian has just published a photo essay on the history of the London Underground. The 11th image is a poster from 1933 promoting our station as a destination in itself: "The latest in Railway Station Architecture, come and see it."

An extract from the poster. To see it in full, and all twenty in the series, follow the link.…
