Volunteer Drivers required

Dowset Club is a social club for adults with learning difficulties. It takes place in Winchmore Hill Methodist Church on Green Lanes every Thursday from 7.00-9.30 p.m. We have been in existence for 50 years and have a well-established club membership. The atmosphere at the club is fun and uplifting, with many of the current volunteers having been at the club for quite some years - I have been a volunteer for 7 years now. We are looking for volunteers to drive a mini-bus to pick up members…

Mat Meets... Sean from Cannon & Cannon

Since we opened The Step we've been lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented and inspirational people - musicians, designers, comedians and crafters to name but a few. So I've decided to get out and about each week, have a natter with people and try and bring their stories to life.

First up, I went to see Sean from  Cannon & Cannon who we have worked with since The Step began and provide the cured meats for our British Charcuterie Board and our…

New River Tunnel inspection 2012

Just sharing this, from Caroline Simpson of the BPCA. Fascinating stuff!
"As many local people will know, we have a brick-built tunnel which carries the New River under a rise in the ground between Myddleton Road and Station Road, Ally Pally.  This usually gets inspected once every ten years or so, but hasn’t been done since the early 90s. This used to involve a…

Do you have room in your life for a homeless young Enfield resident?

A couple of weeks ago at the Enfield Show I was chatting briefly to the team

from Depaul UK, Britain's biggest youth homelessness charity, about Enfield Lodgings the innovative scheme to help homeless young people get back on track. Meghan Read from De Paul has been in touch with more information about the…

Making Jam in the Microwave

This is a book review for a great book which tells you how to make jam in the microwave.   The beauty of it is that you can make just one pot if you like!  Last year I made a variety fo exotic jams and gave them to friends as Christmas gifts.   Living around here is handy because our local shops sell a good variety of fruits like loose dates and figs.  The book also gives recipes for delicious chutneys, spiced cheeses, and frozen summer fruits.

Recipes for Pickled Vegetables

It's that time of the year again - time to get pickling!   Here's some recipes I posted on line - the courgette one is really good!

I need some pickling jars as I've run out of jam jars - maybe that catering shop in Myddleton Road has some?

Noisy neighbours

Hi everyone

I'm going to start with a bit of a rant.......is it me...or was anyone kept awake by the music emanating from the " Club Planet  " bar in Green lanes (opposite Melbourne Ave ) until 3 a.m this morning , this does seem to be getting a regular occurrence, and what makes it more worrying is that they now have a drinks licence....well?

Haringey PARK ART at Bruce Castle

One of my Londonist colleagues went along to Bruce Castle on Wednesday - Torch Relay day - to take photos of the launch of Haringey PARK ART - a massive lion scaffolding structure in the park and a sound and art installation in the Tudor Hawk Tower.

If you've never been over to Bruce Castle, this is an excellent extra reason to go and the ground floor museum is really great…

Wood Green Bowls Club gradually fading into decline.

A couple of years ago I managed to get into the grounds of Wood Green Bowls Club and took a few photographs of the gradually fading clubhouse and scoreboard.

The photographs are in a slide show below - including one or two of the Original 1905 Barford and Perkins Lawn Roller which was still in use at the club 100 years after it was made.

The club itself reached its centenary in 2006 - and published a pamphlet detailing their history  to mark the…

The Green gets new playground in time for school holidays

A wooden playground recently opened on the the green near the Ranelagh Pub. It integrates seamlessly with a large trees-stump that’s been left where it was felled. The tree-stump can be used by adults for sitting on or as a continuation of the play area for older children.

A big thank you to Haringey council for installing such a tasteful set of equipment. Its…
