Located in the playground of North Haringay Primary School…

New Clamping Signs Opposed by Shops, Council and Freeholders

The "Stop the Clamping Group" was setup to channel the support for action expressed on Bowes&Bounds forum pages. If you judge the group by its goal, its been a failure. Almost every day of the week the clampers continue to cash-in on shocked motorists.

Council Warning Signs

The group initially approached Haringey Council to request that they put-up warning signs at the entrance to the private clamping zone near the Bounds Green tube station. The…

Bounds Green's neighbourliness score

"On my London street, you're lucky if your direct neighbour waves a greeting. Anyone living four houses down could be living in Timbuktu; I don't even know what they look like." That's what I remember from an interview on the radio a few weeks back. The woman being interviewed was explaining her opposition to a new Royal Mail scheme where neighbours opt-in to receive parcels for each other. She hardly knew her neighbours and was certainly not ready to trust them with her Amazon…

Professor Harold Rosen - Palmers Green Park Bench

A fairly ordinary bench in Palmers Green's Broomfield Park - by the perimeter wall at the southern end of the ponds - carries a small memorial plaque to Profesor Harold Rosen.

The unassuming inscription, stating he "...would have enjoyed a rest on this bench",  gives no hint of his remarkable life.

Harold Rosen was born in…

Cheaper than Chips - Frugal Plant Holder

I thought these little baskets from Wilko's would solve the problem of not being able to afford window boxes at the moment.   They are from the bathroom section and I guess they are for holding shampoos and stuff like that.   They are only £3.00!  I only got one in case it didn't work, but I think I'll go and get some more.

Two Football Paintings

Here's two of my favourite football paintings.

http://wanderingsineden.blogspot.co.uk/

There's not that many, I don't think, with this subject matter. Lowry did a few.  Anybody else got favourite images of the game?

Seven Local Artists Have Open House this Weekend

Last year I spent a scorching hot afternoon walking from house to house near Sunshine Garden Centre viewing the variety of works on display. This year you don't even need to go far to gorge on local art: Maidstone, Goring, Clarence, Palmerston Roads and Cornwall Avenue all have open houses. There will also be a craft market and craft activities at The Step Bar/Cafe.

Seven local artists are having exhibitions in their houses this weekend as part of the…

"Rebels Against Injustice" Local activities of the Suffragette movement

A recent article on the excellent PalmersGreenN13.com website includes details of a raucous incident that took place 98 years ago this week at Palmers Green Triangle where, according to the local newspaper: ...something rather more lively than the scenes to which staid and…

Great Second Hand Furniture Place, Tottenham

I am singing the praises of Kith & Kids (formerly Mencap) in Tottenham (next to Sainsbury's) because for years they have been supplying me with excellent second hand furniture.  If you enjoy stripping pieces down or just enjoying them in all their ageing glory, this is a great place.  Their stuff changes all the time so one day you might go and be disappointed and the place may look a bit bleak, the next day you may find just what you are looking for and there's stacks of things.  You…

"Insufficient bandwidth" plaguing Bowes Park residents

In the depth of winter last year I saw five phone company engineers removing heavy, greasy black cables the thickness of my arm from under the pavement. They came back later to lay a replacement cable the size of a hosepipe. Then, during the spring the pavements around the entrance of Bounds Green tube was ripped up to allow for the installation of a new green "BT" cabinet. …

Please don't regenerate this corner of Myddleton Road

When I saw this photo of the Lucas Brothers Barber Shop taken in 1999 I was impressed by how little it’s changed in the past decade. I suspect little has changed since it was established in 1982. The premises retain the atmosphere of a barber’s from an earlier period with it's Formica sill and puke green basins.

The spacious shop is a…

The Outer Circle: Rambles in Remote London, by Thomas Burke

I have heard several times the description of Bowes Park as
"Wood Green with its Sunday best on" so I thought I'd pursue the original quote and see if the author had anything else to say about our area ... and what a delight I discovered!

It's from Thomas Burke's book -…

The Gruesome Death of Chung Ling Soo

The Wood Green Empire, built in 1912 was a popular music hall, all polished brass and red velvet, it must have been quite grand compared to the drab domestic surroundings of most of its patrons during the period of the Great War.

The building is still standing in the High Road (it's…

Bowes Rd

Hi,I used to live at 209 Bowes Rd way back in the late 70's-mid 80's and drove past recently and could not believe what they have done to the place. The road was scheduled to be built back in the 60's,but was always put off, which was also the main reason I moved away,as the whole area was blighted and you never knew what was going to happen next.I was really surprised to see 209 still standing, and even more surprised to see it was being renovated,as it was one of the properties at the top of…

Old Bailey Trials

I was sorry that the brilliant series Garrow's Law has ended. Inspired by it, I thought I'd have a look on the Old Bailey trials which are now on line dating from 1674 to 1913.    I came across a fascinating account of a murder committed in 1869 in Truro Road and the poor…

The Housing Scandal

Part 2 of The Great British Property Scandal shows tonight on Channel 4.  It really is a great way to use television, to highlight urgent social issues. It began last night and it featured some boarded up houses on the North Circular which are five minutes down the road and which I noticed about two years ago when I was taking a walk round the area.

These houses have been empty for years but take note - they are on one of the main roads to the Olympic Stadium and so…
